pfschuyler
One of many apps to add support, in case no one was taking this VR thing seriously. CATIA -Vive https://youtu.be/6ZqWUuaWM-g It's not about technology but about the evolution of design workflow....
Smarttec
There is so much going on with both VR based headsets but also AR using iPads as well and have seen interesting demos with AR on them from Solidworks eDrawings. A bit more entry level. With the need for new generation renderers and the Mac's non support of CUDA ( nVidia graphics cards ) it will be interesting what Autodessys formZ will do with future rendering now that high end realtime is happening in modern based graphic card rendering systems. Who knows maybe Apples support for OpenCL will bear fruit? - eventually!
pfschuyler
Great stuff... And these are the most established, oldest names in CAD. Beyond the visualization implications, here are some other FormZ relevant developments. https://mindshow.com/ Animation via acting (like a marionette, but it uses Vive tracking of your body to drive the character rigs). Medium https://www.oculus.com/medium/ Nothing new, but one of a dozen VR modeling apps now, I spent a fair amount of time in it today. The feature set is relatively primitive, but modeling in VR is obviously the future. It actually works and opens whole new horizons in 3d modeling. Mass entertainment or not... These productivity apps are revolutionary even if our existing entertainment and output stays the same. VR is here to stay and practical for design and visualization. AC1000
Dassault's "art to part" design process is brilliant. They have solved many challenging modelling problems. Pipeline from Natural Sketch (with Cintiq) to VR/AR thing is just amazing.
etroxel
With Apple's new iOS level support for ARkit, it would be fantastic to see this added to the form•Z mobile viewer app. Here are some early samples of what developers are doing with ARKit: http://www.madewitharkit.com
Bartjuan
OK Here are a couple more. - with a caveat. Google Tango - a kinect like scanner built into cell phone for rapid 3D scanning of an object / environment.to be used as the foundation for an AR environment See Vertical.ai to see how they are using it. the ARKit will surely make it so that in 2 years 80% of the smartphones out there will have direct sensing AR built in. Vectorworks has a direct to VR export for VR walk-through. this looks genuinely useful. lastly while there are those who think it is desirable to design in VR - stop it! The LAST thing I want is to spend 6 hours with a headset on, in an empty room prancing about like an idiot - isolated from the REAL world around me. While this has some novel charm - it also sounds like a horribly unhealthy practice. I would much rather see the good folks at AutoDesSys get a working Layout module, a good UV mapping module, and robust components.
Shibui Design
I would much rather see the good folks at AutoDesSys get a working Layout module, a good UV mapping module, and robust components. +1 on these three items. My daily tasks are 1. Modeling, 2. Texturing, 3. Rendering, 4. Design documentation. These are fundamental to practicing design. While I am curious in AR, VR, at the end of the day items 1-4 above pay the bills and puts food on the table.
etroxel
While designing in VR may not be great right now because of the heat/etc it won't always be like this. This is still VERY early days OK Here are a couple more. - with a caveat. pfschuyler
https://www.foundry.com/trends/research/modo-vr Plenty of apps are now developing interfaces. Honestly, I'm not really eager for FormZ to do it per se. I just don't want them to be too far behind prepping for these developments....
