Decal and texture mapping

Hello again.

well I've been playing with form z 7 and while, it seems nice. I have come to a area that I'm scratching my head at. Why did the preview for applying decals and textures go away. I can't for the life of me understand how it can be easier to do this in a busy and congested model file when in the older formz this was given it's own window to work with in is there any chance that this might come back.

Hi Tony,

Yes, as Dennis notes, the preview window should not be necessary for using the Map Texture or Edit Texture tools, as their controls can be seen directly onscreen in Shaded view modes, but if you want to isolate the part first, just right click and choose Isolate before adjusting the Textures.

Does that help?

I guess I'm just at odds with the whole new interface. Like why was the decal tool omitted in the first place? in formz 6.x.x. it was part of the texture/paint tool set. why was the decision made to drop it in the first place.... I have to say that this re-learn is being done grudgingly. I'm really trying to find the benefit of the upgrade to begin with. I mean I love formz and is the only application that i use to model with but I have yet to see where the upgrade has improved my ability to work, faster, smarter or what ever. I  will continue to work through it though I'm a vervion or two behind already. I know that this is the direction that Autodessys wanted to go so I must trudge ahead.

Tony... I also do not know why decals are not part of texture tools pallet. You can customize pallets by opening tool manager & dragging the decal tool into the texture pallet. I always have done that. You can also set up workspaces & it will always be there.

and that is what I have done. I want to really thank all the reply's and input I find them all very helpful. I hope to learn the new as well as i Knew the old.  progress is always slow at first. I continue to review all the videos and You tube inputs, that with the help from the form here I'm sure to see the light of day soon.

Removing the preview windows from the formZ interface has led to some missing features, one of which I can think is in the export options dialog where you can specify "swap x y" etc., there used to be a nice preview window showing you how the coordinate system looked in formZ vs. the export options you set.  Now that preview window is gone.

I was in your same boat about two years ago when I made the switch from 6.7.  It was painful  since I had been using Form.z since 1990 and my habits were pretty ingrained.  V7 wasn't so much of an upgrade as a complete rethinking of how the program worked.  Letting go of the old texture map tool and preview window was one of the harder things to do.

I now find it  necessary to use two different tools ( map texture, edit texture) to do the same thing that the old tool did.  One curious and sometimes frustrating aspect of the new program is the ability of the software to guess at the correct mapping for any object.  If the program guesses wrong then clearing the mapping (using Map Texture tool) and starting over is the only solution. As stated above by tech the easiest way to texture map is to isolate the object you are working on.  If by chance your are working on a large model and you copied the texture map from another object (copy attributes)  onto the new one then your texture controls will be way off screen and you will need to pan around to find them ( or start over using Map Texture ).  After two years it still has not become second nature to me but perhaps I am just getting slower.
