Odd DWG import results

Hi all,

I received a DWG file that, when imported, doesn't fully render.  Only the backside of the model shows up.  It doesn't matter from what angle you view the model, most of the front portion becomes invisible.  The wire mesh is visible and the object doctor doesn't show any issues.  I've imported the file several different ways, but with always the same result.   I'm working in 8.5.3, but 6.7 could only import a small portion of the file.

Anyone have any clue what might be causing this?  Due to the project associated with the file, I'm not able to upload the DWG file. I can upload the fmz file though, which has the trouble portion.  There are also a couple screenshots showing the issue.  Any advice is appreciated!

anyone else come across something like this before?

thanks,

db

Hi DB,

Yes, there are problems with the geometry in this file, including ones that are inside out.   Use the Project Doctor to fix the inside out objects.  Then use the Object Doctor (Select all and click with the Add to Selection option) to see other problems that exist.

Use the Object Doctor again with the Fix option to automatically fix what can be fixed.  Use the Object Doctor a third time with the Add to Selection option to see the remaining problems...

First of all, thanks to both envdesign and Tech for responding so quickly!  I have a Monday deadline and wasn't looking forward to remaking these pieces!

Did you try reversing the faces? You might try to ungroup and or unstitch all surfaces and then try reversing faces until everything displays properly. Hope this helps!

Envdesign, this worked perfectly!  I've been using formZ for over 15 years, but since most of the stuff I do is fairly simple (especially compared to some of the users on here), I'm still discovering tools.  I would have never even known to try this.  Thank you!!!!

I admit that I was getting frustrated with the Object Doctor tool, because it wasn't showing that anything was wrong.  I kept overlooking the Project Doctor.  Again, just like the Reverse tool, this is another one that I hadn't used yet, and didn't know about.  I had to use the Object Doctor tool 6-7 to finally get everything straightened out, but it worked like a charm!

Again, thanks to both of you for helping me out and saving me hours of finding the solution on my own!  I had already wasted a couple hours on this before I gave up and asked for help.  I should have hit up the forum sooner!

Thanks again!!

It looks like it is a triangulated sub-D model.  Ugh.  I've had to wrestle with many of these headache files.  Life would be easier if their export was the original polys (quads) and not triangulated....and if it wasn't triangulated, you could use FZ's new sub-D tools to have a very nice hi-res, smooth model!

Hi DB,

Great, glad to help!

But there are still a lot of problems identified by the Object Doctor!

Very true, and while it took several clicks for the Object Doctor to repair the model, every issue seemed to be resolved.

I'm just glad I was able to open it and use what was in it.  I've had several of these type of files lately, and with Ver 6.7, wasn't even able to open them.

Hi DB,

Well...

1.  Object Doctor with the Fix option will ONLY Display Results that are Fixed.  (Fixing objects and all results are zero indicates that Nothing was fixed -- not that there are no problems.)

As noted above, you need to run it again with the Add To Selection option to see the problems that still exist -- which are still fairly extensive.  (Although even with such problems, the objects can be used -- but don't be surprised if you can't Boolean objects with crossing faces, or if other such issues arise with this bad geometry.)

2.  This is not an import problem at all.  This is a problem with the geometry created by the other program.  If bad data is exported, then that is what will be imported.

If Setz's guess is correct, then you may indeed be able to get better results if you can export only the SubD Cage instead of the "improperly smoothed" objects themselves.  (Do you know what program created these objects, and is it possible to try that?)

Thanks for the clarification on the object doctor. Thankfully, I didn't need to do anything too complicated with the model.

For the import problem, I haven't been able to get any response about the origins of the file. The model that I received had been imported into autocad first. I'll continue to see if I can get some info on it, but there's a language barrier that makes it a little more complicated.

Thanks again for the education!
