"maxwell unable to write mxs"

I've just purchased Maxwell... just installed, fired it up, and tried Maxwell as the display, but I get this error...

 

I can't read the bottom because the text is cut off and the alert box is not resizable.

 

Any ideas?

Hi Andrew,

 

Do you have write permission to the MXS location -- and if you are on a Mac, does Repairing Permissions help?

Hi Andrew,

 

The plugin has a nice feature, called the Log, which allows your to diagnose most rendering issues. AFTER attempting to render, select Extensions > Maxwell Render > Log. If there are errors in the attempted render, they will be listed and highlighted.

 

If the Log does not help, please post a simple file which exhibits the problem.

Most likely Pylon or other Maxwell experts can give you more detailed advice, but this is the part you should focus on:

Do you have all the necessary maps for the materials for these objects, and are you either using Shaded or Maxwell (and not RenderZone) Materials for these objects?

Hi - yeah, saw those....

 

No textures have been changed or applied - the objects are all whatever the default material is (Shaded I guess?).

 

That said, I did experiment a little be redefining the default as a basic Maxwell texture. Fire still seemed to work fine, but I got the same error when trying to change the display to Maxwell.

The objects causing the error were most likely imported from Sketchup. Sometimes Sketchup objects come into formZ with bad texture UVs; this is most likely the issue here.

 

Try using formZ's 'Map Texture' tool on the objects to fix the problem. You can use formZ's Select by Criteria palette and search for objects with [ERR] in their names.

 

If that does not work, ghost the objects so they are not considered by the plugin.

Is there a "best practice" for using imported SU elements? I'm not familiar with the process yet, and not sure if there's a way to identify potential issues.

 

Also thanks for the ghosting tip, I guess that's a pretty good way to find a culprit.

Re: best practices, just use the Map Textures tool on the offending objects.

 

If you can post your formZ file before you fix the objects, it would be very helpful. We are trying to find a way to fix this automatically, but need examples of bad sketchup geometry in formZ to test with.

Ok! The ketchup items (one of them, anyway) seems to have been the culprit - I turned their visibility off, and it Display > Maxwell Render worked as expected!

 

By the way, autocorrect changed "SketchUp" to "ketchup" so I left it alone.
