Layout frame parameters

Recommended Posts

In the layout video by Matthew Holewinkski, 13minutes 40 seconds into the video, he demonstates clicking on a frame border to post access the frame parameters. The only time I can access the frame parameters is at the time the frame is first created. I do not get the yellow border which he shows but there are times I would like to be able to get to the frame parameters to make changes later rather than at the creation stage of the layout frame. Windows 7. FormZ 8.02 pro. build 9413

I am only starting to experiment with Layout but have not had success with dimensions being associative after a change to the model, the simplest of model examples.

Hi Alan,

You need to Right Click the Frame and choose Parameters from the Context Menu to adjust them.

There can be an issue with the automatic updating of Dimensions after the model is modified.  This will be fixed with the next update (coming soon).

Hi Tech,

Thank you, I realise this should be simple, and I think I already understand what I should be able to do, as you have explained, but I had already tried persistently to make that happen, but it does not work for me. I right click the frame and nothing happens. The yellow frame as in the webinar, I don't even get that a yellow frame on my computer.

Hi Alan,

The color of the frames is the same as that for the Control Editor 1, which you have set as dark green, and which we edited to light green here:

When you open your file, you need to zoom out so you can see these frame borders, then right click on them and choose Properties:

Does that help?

Sorry Tech, but no, something is definitely broken at this end.

Screen shot attached. When I hover over a frame, it turns pale red, and if I right click on it it turns darker red. No green at all and certainly no context menu.

Hi Alan,

If you go to the Edit Menu: Key Shortcuts, and save your shortcuts to a file, then Load Defaults, does that work any better?

If not, if you Quit formZ, go to C: Users: User: App Data: Roaming -- and rename the autodessys folder, does that help?

Hi Alan,

Ok, try this.  Quit formZ, go to C:\users\[uSER]\AppData\Roaming\

Then rename the autodessys folder (just add a number to the end of the name).

(Note that [uSER] is the  name with which you log onto your computer, and if you don't see the App Data folder, you can show this by going to the Windows Explorer: Tools Menu: Folder Options: View Tab -- and choosing Show Hidden Files, and clicking OK.)

Then relaunch formZ and try it once more.  Does that help?

Hi Tech,

Ok, I also tried this and it also works. And when I reload my previous shortcuts file, it again removes ability to access the local menu for the frame, so confirmation it was the shortcut file causing the problem. Thank you.

Hi Alan,

Whoops, that's strange, I could have sworn that your previous post said it did NOT solve the problem.  Perhaps I was reading too fast before my first cup of coffee!

Can you send your shortcut file so we can test with this here?

Hi Alan,

Thanks for sending your key shortcut file.  It appears that most of the default key shortcuts have been removed, including the Context Menu command (single right click):

You can just re-add this shortcut (single left click), but with so many of the default shortcuts missing, you will likely run into other missing shortcuts in the future.  You can either deal with these as they come, or you can use the Default Shortcuts -- and then re-add your custom shortcuts to these.  It will be a bit more work, but to prevent similar issues to this in the future, it will likely be worth it.

I also learned something -- above I asked if right clicking in Palettes brought up the context menu.  I assumed that this meant that you did not remove this key shortcut -- but I was wrong about that.  That feature works independently of whether or not this key shortcut is enabled, so at least I can avoid that mistake in the future and have them check for a context menu when right clicking on an object in the project window instead..

Thanks Tech. I had removed default shortcuts thinking that if I mis-key or one of our puppies [had 5 but kept 1] walks on my keyboard I didn't want some mystery action to result. There are just a few shortcuts which I would rather were not there as they could perhaps be 'dangerous', but rather than trawl through, and not understanding what some of them actually did, thought it was easier to clear and add the ones I thought I might actually use. Looks like I both missed some and added a few I have never used. I don't get on with default shortcuts and prefer simple ones for regularly used actions and though not easy, have done my best to appoint them in a logical manner, but it's time soon for me to appraise them.

By the way, I was just about to say "the edit menu shortcuts are too hard to find individual entries because there are so many categories. There needs to be a view where each entry is listed alphabetically regardless of category, with the category name following it where there are repeats." But this facility is already there by clicking on the 'command' heading. Bravo, wish I had noticed earlier!
